Soundscape Lands on Android: A New Era for Accessible Navigation

Soundscape has officially arrived on Android for the first time. Kirsty McIntosh from the Scottish Tech Army shares how a small volunteer team rebuilt the beloved navigation app from Microsoft’s open-source code, why community feedback is crucial in its beta phase, and the ongoing challenge of funding its long-term future.

When Microsoft announced it would end its Soundscape navigation app, many blind and low-vision users feared losing a trusted mobility tool. Thanks to Microsoft’s decision to open-source the code, the Scottish Tech Army and a dedicated volunteer group recreated the iOS version in 2023—and now, after months of quiet development, an Android beta is live in the Google Play Store.

Kirsty McIntosh outlines the technical journey, the role of volunteer developers, and the importance of gathering user feedback to refine the Android version to match iOS functionality. She also addresses the sustainability question, advocating for collective charity funding to cover modest running costs while preserving community control. The conversation highlights the value of accessibility-first design, the cross-learning between volunteers and users, and the wider potential for open-source assistive tech projects.
