Ring Launches First 4K Battery-Powered Video Doorbell with Familiar Faces in the UK
Ring has unveiled a new generation of its video doorbells, introducing the company’s first battery-powered models with 2K and 4K resolution. Dave Ward, International Managing Director at Ring, confirmed during a Double Tap interview that the devices are now available in the UK, bringing sharper video, smarter notifications, and enhanced accessibility for all users. The update is designed to improve home security and make monitoring the front door easier and more personalised.
The new doorbells feature significant hardware and software upgrades. Higher-resolution cameras allow users to zoom up to 10 times on 4K models, providing more detail for security purposes. A key addition is Familiar Faces, which locally stores up to 50 recognised faces, enabling tailored notifications such as identifying frequent visitors. Ward explained, “It’s not just about knowing who is at the door—it’s also about reducing unnecessary alerts when it’s someone you expect.”
Usability improvements have also been prioritised. The doorbells now include quick-release battery packs with faster charging, optional solar-powered accessories, and sleeker, rounded designs. Ring has focused on making installation simple for a wide range of homes, from flats to detached houses, with battery, wired, and solar options available.
Ward emphasised that while all devices work without a subscription, Ring Protect plans add features like six months of video storage and smart video descriptions that can notify users of specific activity, such as “a person walking towards the door with a brown dog and a bag.” These enhancements are particularly valuable for users who rely on clear, descriptive alerts rather than visual checks.
The launch marks the first time UK customers can access Familiar Faces and advanced 2K and 4K battery-powered models, following positive feedback from earlier releases in Japan, Canada, and the US. Ring aims to balance meaningful upgrades with long product lifespans, ensuring new hardware cycles focus on significant improvements in clarity, security, and ease of use.
