Perkins Launches Bloom: Add-On Brings Classic Brailler into the Digital Age
Perkins has released Bloom, a $300 add-on that transforms the classic Perkins Brailler into a digital keyboard. Connecting via Bluetooth or USB, Bloom enables real-time Braille-to-text translation, supporting classrooms, parents, and Braille learners.
Bloom attaches to the underside of any classic Perkins Brailler, replacing its cardboard base with a sturdy metal platform. Once clipped in and powered on, it connects via Bluetooth or USB to devices running Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, or Chromebook.
“Our goal was to give the 400,000 Braillers already in use around the world a new digital life without asking users to buy or learn an entirely new product,” said Meghan Gagne, Director of Product for Braille Innovation., speaking to Double Tap.
With an onboard Braille-to-text translation engine, Bloom allows typed Braille to appear instantly on a connected screen. This feature enables teachers, parents, and colleagues who do not read Braille to follow along in real time. Kim Charlson, Executive Director of the Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library, highlighted the impact in classrooms:
“Instead of waiting days for interlining and feedback, students can get immediate responses to their work. It keeps them engaged and part of the classroom conversation.”
Bloom also works without paper, providing a tactile typing experience while simultaneously sending digital input. French and Spanish support is expected soon, extending the device’s global reach.
Priced at $300 in the US, Bloom is available through Perkins and its international reseller network, with local funding options varying by region.
