Open Deck Update Brings Full Accessibility to Elgato Stream Decks

Florian, a blind developer and accessibility advocate from the Netherlands, has contributed major updates to the open-source Open Deck project, making Elgato Stream Deck devices fully operable with screen readers. The development allows blind and partially sighted users to create custom button actions without using Elgato’s inaccessible official software. This breakthrough offers new opportunities for independent content creators and professionals seeking accessible workflow tools.

Elgato’s Stream Deck is a popular USB control panel with programmable buttons featuring small display screens. While widely used for streaming, automation, and home control, the official Stream Deck software relies heavily on drag-and-drop interactions, making it “accessibly hostile” for screen reader users, according to Florian.

After Elgato confirmed it had no short- or medium-term plans to improve accessibility, Florian began contributing to Open Deck, a community-developed alternative. Collaborating with the project maintainer, he introduced keyboard-driven workflows and screen reader-friendly navigation.

“Instead of sending another email asking for accessibility, I decided to fix it myself,” Florian said. His contributions included hundreds of lines of code, now integrated into the project’s main release on GitHub.

The update allows users to assign actions to Stream Deck keys entirely via keyboard, bypassing the inaccessible official app. While some plugins still require files from Elgato’s software, most common functions—such as launching apps, controlling smart lights, and managing streaming software like OBS—can now be configured directly in Open Deck.

The change affects blind content creators, streamers, and professionals seeking reliable accessible control devices. It also demonstrates the potential of collaborative, open-source efforts to resolve long-standing accessibility gaps in mainstream hardware.
