HumanWare’s Mantis Q40 Update Brings Text-to-Speech and Audio Support
Andrew Flatres from HumanWare joins Steven Scott to discuss the new software update for the Mantis Q40 braille display, introducing text-to-speech (TTS) and audio support. Andrew explains how the update, available from December 11, 2024, uses Bluetooth connectivity for audio output via speakers or headphones, addressing a long-standing user request. “This has been a long time waiting for,” he says, detailing how TTS enhances learning for new braille users by offering auditory feedback alongside braille input.
Andrew highlights that this update will work seamlessly on existing devices without requiring hardware upgrades, alleviating user concerns about needing to purchase new equipment. He acknowledges challenges like Bluetooth latency and notes that user feedback from beta testing has led to adjustments, such as replacing double beeps with verbal announcements like “caps on” or “caps off.”
The update also adds online modules for accessing Wiktionary and Wikipedia directly from the device, an offline dictionary, and support for EPUB 2 unprotected files. Andrew confirms that HumanWare plans further expansions, including additional library integrations in future updates.
Andrew also explains the new Acapela voice options for TTS, including regional favorites and less popular voices like Daniel. He shares tips for pairing Bluetooth devices and managing voice profiles for content and menus.
