HumanWare Expands Victor Reader Stream 3 Features with Greater Customisation and New Download Controls

HumanWare has released a significant update to the Victor Reader Stream 3, introducing new features aimed at improving user control and navigation. Mathieu Paquette, Product Manager at HumanWare, confirmed the changes in an interview on Double Tap, highlighting increased flexibility and usability for blind users.

Version 1.6 centres on customisation. Paquette said the goal was “giving the user more control,” with major updates to bookshelf navigation. Users can now hide unused applications and switch from a circular navigation model to a list-based system, allowing movement between apps using directional keys rather than cycling through menus.

Podcast management has also been refined. Users can now set how many episodes to retain per feed. “If it’s a daily podcast… you might only want to keep one or two episodes,” Paquette explained, adding that this reduces clutter and improves efficiency.

A new download manager allows users to prioritise, cancel, or reorder downloads. This addresses a long-standing issue where users had limited control over queued content. In addition, a Bluetooth shortcut—activated by holding the number nine key—enables faster switching between paired devices, including headphones and smart speakers.

Looking ahead, HumanWare is planning further enhancements. Support for external Bluetooth keyboards will expand in version 1.7, expected later this year, enabling users to control playback and navigation. The company has also added support for eBraille files, though currently limited to text playback.

Paquette confirmed ongoing efforts to expand content services. Integration with libraries such as Bookshare Ireland is under discussion, while challenges remain in connecting to RNIB services due to API and support limitations. He also noted interest in adding platforms like Spotify, though partnerships have yet to be established.

The update reinforces the Stream 3’s position as a dedicated media consumption device, with continued emphasis on accessible content delivery and simplified navigation.

These updates improve day-to-day usability for blind users by reducing navigation friction and offering more control over content. As competition grows in the assistive tech market, HumanWare’s focus on integrated services and familiar design remains a key differentiator.
