Global Accessibility Awareness Day Marks 15 Years as AI Redefines Digital Inclusion
Joe Devon, co-founder of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), has highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence in accessibility during the 15th annual GAAD. Speaking on the Double Tap podcast, Devon warned that while awareness has grown, digital accessibility remains inconsistent, with AI both a challenge and a potential solution.
Devon noted that the latest WebAIM Million report shows worsening accessibility across major websites, with increasing page complexity and what he described as “AI slop” from auto-generated code. “We’re in a transition phase,” he said. “AI is changing the game, but without proper oversight, it risks producing less usable experiences for everyone.”
He emphasised that AI tools such as OpenAI’s Codex, Anthropic’s Claude, and GitHub Copilot are enabling blind users to create personalised solutions, a trend he referred to as “vibe coding”. This allows individuals to build small applications and adapt technology to their needs without formal coding experience. “Everybody should be able to personalise software to their own needs,” Devon explained.
However, he cautioned against over-reliance on AI code. “I don’t trust it. You definitely want to verify it,” he said, stressing the value of accessibility professionals and robust engineering when moving from personal projects to production software.
Looking to the future, Devon highlighted the potential of AI agents, such as OpenClaude, to act as universal interfaces by interacting with inaccessible apps and websites on behalf of users. “This is a massive shift. It disambiguates the need to adapt to every user interface,” he said, though he acknowledged current tools remain unstable.
This development is significant for blind and partially sighted users, offering unprecedented independence in creating accessible solutions. While AI presents new opportunities, the persistent inaccessibility of mainstream digital products underscores the need for developers and AI companies to remain accountable.
