CNIB Launch New Talking Microwave

In this episode of Double Tap, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece talk with Bram Caron, Manager, CNIB SmartLife Business Development, about their new talking microwave designed for accessibility. Bram explains, “Everything you do with this microwave has an auditory component, telling you exactly what you’re doing.” The microwave features two dials for setting time and power, with tactile buttons for key functions, making it suitable for users with blindness, vision loss or dexterity challenges.

“A simple interface is vital when all you need is high power for a certain time.”

Bram confirms that while the microwave is purely for microwaving, it marks CNIB’s first step into accessible kitchen appliances: “We wanted to start with a key appliance that everyone uses.” He teases future CNIB-branded accessible kitchen devices, adding, “This is go big or go home for us.”

CNIB developed the microwave in collaboration with international partners, responding to years of user requests for reliable accessible kitchen equipment. Bram notes, “We carry many talking devices, but people want something we stand behind.” The CNIB microwave, priced at $399 CAD, is available across Canada via cnibsmartlife.ca, with select international availability through CNIB’s partners. Users can also visit any CNIB office to try the microwave in person.
