Blind Veterans UK Member Explores Accessible Tech and Embraces New Digital Skills

Clive Jones, a member of Blind Veterans UK, has shared how the charity’s support has enabled him to rebuild his life after losing his sight in his mid-twenties, and how he is now beginning to explore modern accessible technology, including apps and smart glasses.

Jones, who became blind following a serious assault while serving in the army, explained that Blind Veterans UK—formerly St Dunstan’s—provided crucial rehabilitation services and ongoing support. “They have been the be-all and end-all for me,” he said. “Without them, I don’t know where myself, my wife or my children would be.”

While he admits to being cautious with technology, Jones has taught himself to use an iPhone and JAWS on his PC, relying on apps like Be My Eyes as his most-used digital tool. Recently, he tried a pair of Meta smart glasses for the first time. “I thought they were very good,” he said, adding that he hopes to explore more accessible tech, including tools like ChatGPT.

Blind Veterans UK continues to support Jones with both daily living and technology skills, ensuring members can access as much or as little help as they need. The charity provides training in computer use, kitchen skills, and mobility, and offers home visits from rehabilitation officers when required.

The experience reflects a wider trend in accessibility: as assistive technology becomes more intuitive, blind users with little prior experience are increasingly able to integrate digital tools into their daily lives. For veterans like Jones, this not only enables independence but also opens doors to community participation, hobbies, and volunteering opportunities.
