Blind User Reports Accessibility Gaps in Zoox Robotaxi Despite Advances in Driverless Cars
Kevin Chao, an early adopter of autonomous vehicles in the United States, has shared first-hand experiences of using multiple driverless car services, highlighting significant accessibility differences between platforms. Speaking on Double Tap, Chao detailed how services from Waymo, Tesla, and Zoox compare for blind users, with accessibility emerging as a key differentiator.
Chao confirmed that fully driverless vehicles are already operating in cities such as San Francisco and Austin, with services expanding gradually. He described Waymo as “by far the best” in terms of accessibility, citing features such as detailed audio guidance, haptic feedback, and the ability to locate vehicles using sound. “It will give you direction and distance… and you can have it play a melody or honk so you can audibly locate it,” he said.
Tesla’s Robotaxi service was reported to offer similar core functionality, including accessible vehicle requests, navigation, and climate controls. However, Chao noted limitations, particularly around in-car media controls and the lack of detailed audio descriptions during journeys.
In contrast, Zoox—owned by Amazon—was described as the least accessible despite its futuristic design. The vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and features inward-facing seating, relies heavily on touchscreens that are not compatible with screen readers. “None of that works with VoiceOver… I had to get a sighted person to control everything,” Chao said.
He also highlighted issues with the Zoox app, including inaccessible map-based pickup selection and the inability to independently locate the vehicle. Feedback has been submitted to the company, but accessibility remains limited during its current pilot phase.
The findings underline a growing divide in accessibility standards as autonomous vehicles move toward wider deployment. While Waymo demonstrates how inclusive design can enhance usability, Zoox’s approach reflects ongoing challenges in integrating accessibility from the outset. For blind users, these differences directly affect independence, safety, and usability in emerging transport systems.
