Be My Eyes Surpasses 1 Million Users and Launches Foundation to Keep AI Tools Free

Be My Eyes has surpassed one million blind and low vision users and ten million volunteers, according to CEO Mike Buckley in an interview on Double Tap. The company also announced new Meta smart glasses features and the launch of a nonprofit foundation aimed at ensuring continued free access to advanced AI tools.

Buckley described the milestone as “a momentous moment,” noting rapid growth across 163 countries, with around 16,000 new users joining each month. He credited founder Hans Wiberg, stating he has “dented the universe” through the platform’s global impact.

Two new features are coming through an expanded partnership with Meta. Users of Meta Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses will gain access to private group calling, allowing trusted contacts to respond to assistance requests. In addition, users will be able to contact corporate support services hands-free via voice commands, such as connecting directly to companies like Microsoft. Buckley said this shift to voice interaction is “a huge change,” highlighting the importance of hands-free access for users navigating with a cane or guide dog.

The company also confirmed the creation of the Be My Eyes Foundation, backed initially by Microsoft and OpenAI. The nonprofit aims to address concerns about a growing divide between paid and free AI tools. Buckley warned that increasing investment in AI could lead to “a digital divide,” where lower-income users receive inferior services.

The foundation will focus on funding and distributing high-quality, free assistive technology globally. Buckley said the goal is to “accelerate the deployment and dissemination of free tools” and ensure Be My Eyes never has to charge users for core services.

These developments signal a shift toward scaling both access and sustainability in assistive technology, particularly as AI becomes more central to everyday tools.

The announcements affect blind and low vision users globally, particularly those relying on free services. The integration with smart glasses improves real-world usability, while the foundation addresses long-term concerns about affordability and equitable access to AI-driven tools.
