Apple Announces New iPhone 16E

On Double Tap (Wednesday 19th February) Steven Scott and Shaun Preece discuss Apple’s launch of the iPhone 16E, a new budget-friendly addition to the iPhone 16 lineup. Apple describes the device as bringing “the performance, intelligence, and privacy you expect” at a lower price point, replacing the long-running iPhone SE series. “Does this mean the SE brand is dead?” Steven asks, as the conversation shifts to Apple’s decision to drop the ‘SE’ label in favor of the ‘E’ branding.

The iPhone 16E features the A18 chip, ensuring top-tier performance for years to come. “This is the same processor in the flagship iPhone 16 range,” Shaun notes, emphasizing that Apple has maintained high performance despite its lower cost. The phone also introduces Apple’s new C1 modem, promising fast and power-efficient 5G connectivity. One major upgrade is Apple Intelligence, integrating AI-powered tools into apps like Photos and Messages, allowing users to remove distractions from images or create AI-generated emojis. Apple also confirms that Siri now incorporates ChatGPT, allowing users to generate responses, refine writing, and even plan meals.

Physically, the iPhone 16E adopts the same 6.1-inch OLED display as the iPhone 16, finally eliminating the home button and moving entirely to Face ID. “USB-C is here, but MagSafe is gone,” Steven points out, questioning Apple’s decision to omit its magnetic charging standard. The camera system includes a single 48-megapixel lens with 2x optical zoom, and it supports features like Night Mode and Smart HDR. “Honestly, I don’t care that it’s just one camera,” Shaun adds, arguing that most users won’t miss multiple lenses.

Steven and Shaun debate whether users should opt for the iPhone 16E or move up to the standard iPhone 16. Shaun highlights missing features like Dynamic Island and ultra-wide camera support, but Steven counters, “For blind users, this is a solid option. You get flagship speed, a great camera, and Face ID at a much lower price.” The iPhone 16E is priced at $899 CAD, with pre-orders starting February 21 and shipping the following week.
