“One Tip for Any Cane” — Sensaball Launches Multi-Directional Cane Tip for Global Market

A new multi-directional cane tip designed to improve safety and ground feedback for white cane users is now available worldwide. The Sensaball tip, developed in Australia, rolls smoothly in all directions, reducing the risk of canes catching on pavement edges and improving detection of steps, surface changes, and obstacles.

Inventor Peter Rickards, who co-created the tip with his industrial designer son Rowan, discussed the product with Double Tap. Peter said the idea came after jabbing himself in the stomach during a mobility lesson when his traditional cane tip caught on uneven pavement. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” he explained, describing how years of prototyping led to the current design, which has been extensively field-tested.

Unlike standard tips that pivot in limited directions or wear out quickly, the Sensaball tip rotates and glides in full 360-degree motion. Early tester Brent Smith, who returned to cane use after a period without a guide dog, said he immediately noticed the difference. “Within two minutes of using it, the light bulb went off. I’ve never struck a cane tip like it,” he said. He highlighted its ability to roll over cracks and varied terrain, offering both smoother travel and enhanced spatial awareness.

The tip has been engineered to fit almost any cane, including both slip-on and hook-style models, with optional adaptors supporting diameters from 9 to 13 millimetres. Testing has demonstrated effective performance on surfaces ranging from grass and gravel to snow and sand, and the team has already shipped units to the UK, US, Canada, Germany, and Hong Kong.

Priced at approximately £73 for two tips, the Sensaball is currently being sold online, with limited promotional offers available. Frazer emphasised that the innovation aims to make cane travel safer and more reliable for users worldwide. “One tip for any cane,” Smith said, summarising the team’s goal to create a single, universal solution for mobility.
