iPass LIDAR Device Targets European Launch for Blind Users

A new handheld assistive device called iPass is set to launch across Europe, offering blind users a novel way to quickly map their surroundings using LIDAR technology. The device, which emits stereo audio feedback to indicate the distance of objects, promises to help users perceive room layouts, locate doors, and identify obstacles or crowds without physically touching them.

The iPass was developed by Euginio Rustico, who spoke to Double Tap following its debut at SightCity 2026 in Frankfurt. Weighing only 80 grams and shaped like a small remote, iPass uses dual LIDAR sensors to measure distances from one centimetre to ten metres with a latency of just five milliseconds. “The device is meant as a perception tool, not a mobility aid,” the developer explained. “It gives you a 3D profile in seconds, but the intelligence lies in the user.”

Unlike sonar-based devices, iPass provides highly accurate and narrow distance readings, which the user interprets through variations in sound pitch. Experienced users can quickly detect open spaces, identify queues, or estimate the number of people in a room. Early testers have reported creative use cases such as finding the end of a train, navigating supermarket aisles, or locating toilets in unfamiliar restrooms without physical exploration.

The device is set to roll out in Germany first, with wider European distribution planned by the end of the year. Pricing is expected to remain below €1,000, reflecting the high cost of its cutting-edge LIDAR components. Discussions with distributors outside Europe are ongoing, but the immediate focus remains on achieving certification and building a user base within the European market.

According to the developer, the iPass is designed to complement rather than replace traditional tools like the white cane or guide dog. Its potential impact lies in enabling faster spatial awareness in static situations, offering blind users an additional layer of environmental perception.
