“Accessible Gaming Brings Joy Back to Life” — Aaron Spelker on the Future of Blind Gaming
A growing online community is transforming gaming for blind players, with more than 250 accessible iPhone game reviews now available through Mobile Accessible Games. The group, founded by Aaron Spelker, offers detailed guides and workarounds to help blind players enjoy a wide range of mobile titles. Spelker told Double Tap that the project was born from his frustration at the lack of accessible games after he lost his sight seven years ago.
Spelker, who chairs the American Council of the Blind’s Subcommittee on Accessible Gaming, explained during his interview with Double Tap that the initiative has grown to nearly 4,000 members. “All my game reviews are for completely blind players,” he said, noting that any remaining vision only enhances the experience. Initially focused on card and text-based games, the group now covers over 40 genres, demonstrating that mobile gaming can offer diverse and rewarding experiences without sight.
The community’s growth coincides with rapid advances in accessibility technology. Spelker highlighted how AI tools, including Apple’s on-device intelligence and image description features in JAWS, are helping players access previously unplayable titles. He suggested that real-time AI descriptions could eventually make complex console games like Skyrim and Fallout more viable for blind gamers.
Beyond entertainment, Spelker sees gaming as a vital source of mental wellbeing. After losing his vision, he faced a period of isolation before rediscovering the joy of games. His detailed reviews and weekly recommendations aim to prevent others from feeling that “gaming is over” after blindness.
Spelker’s advocacy extends to public speaking, including a recent appearance at the Video Game Accessibility Conference in London, hosted by RNIB and University College London. He continues to encourage developers to integrate accessibility features and consider audio description to make mainstream titles truly inclusive.
Accessible gaming, Spelker believes, is entering a new era—one where technology and community combine to restore play, creativity, and social connection for blind players.
